Currently, we support current versions of Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome, as well as Internet Explorer 8 and above. However, due to security restrictions in place, you may experience assorted issues opening the Prezi modules. In order to receive the best user experience, we currently recommend Google Chrome over other browsers.

How Do I Navigate Through a Prezi?
How to advance? Use the Right or Left arrows to move forward and backwards respectively along the path. Alternatively, use Space to advance along the path (only in Present Mode Fullscreen).

How to zoom? You can also use the Zoom In and Zoom Out icons (indicated by the + and - signs on right end of screen) or use the Up and Down arrows on the keyboard to zoom in or out.
Hold Z - When holding down the Z key, you can zoom in and out by moving the mouse up and down.

Welcome to the University of New Mexico Health Science Center's faculty mentoring resource. The purpose of this training is to provide a basic set of skills and knowledge specific to faculty mentoring in the context of our institution with an emphasis on translational science.

The following materials support the Mentor Development Program. You can read and learn about different aspects of mentorship. Each module offers cases that document individual scenarios, solutions, and tools, which are discussed in detail.

Defining Mentoring from the Beginning

This seminar focuses on defining the roles and the expectations for the mentoring team of the lead mentor, co-mentor, career mentor, and advisor as well as for the mentee. Helpful tools and strategies will be presented and discussed within the context of case scenarios, including a check-list for mentors and mentees and the concept of an Individual Development Plan (IDP).

Objectives:

- Define and describe mentoring, including the origin of the concept
- Describe the various roles played by mentors of junior faculty in academic research
- Map mutual relationships, expectations, and responsibilities in the mentoring relationship
- Develop appropriate mentoring plans


Rewards and Challenges of Mentoring

This seminar aims to highlight the rewards and challenges of mentorship and to motivate mid-level or senior investigators to mentor novice researchers. Helpful tools and strategies are presented and discussed within the context of case scenarios that demonstrate how to deal with these challenges or turn them into rewards and identify a successful and rewarding mentoring relationship.

Objectives:

- Describe the evidence that suggests the need for effective mentoring in biomedical research
- Discuss the rewards of becoming a mentoring
    > Personal rewards
    > Professional rewards
- Consider the challenges to effective mentoring
- Discuss effective ways to end unsuccessful mentoring relationships
- Discuss case scenarios that illustrate strategies for meeting mentoring challenges


Communicating Effectively with Mentees

This seminar presents essentials of effective communication, including personal awareness, active listening, and emotional intelligence. It also demonstrates specific challenges to mentor-mentee communication. Helpful skills and tools will be offered to assess underlying issues affecting the mentee's performance, potential roles of conflict, and strategies to help the mentee identify his or her true skills and passions.

Objectives:

- Evaluate your communication style and recognize the pros and cons of your style.
- Describe active listening and its importance in effective communication.
- Identify ways to effectively convey your ideas.
- Identify ways to promote mentee communication and self-efficacy.
- Define emotional intelligence and its importance in effective communication.


Achieving Work-Life Balance

This seminar introduces important aspects of balancing personal and professional lives, while providing the opportunity to learn from shared experiences. Helpful tools and strategies are presented and discussed within the context of case scenarios that demonstrate how to deal with the challenges in balancing work and life.

Objectives:

- Define work-life or personal-professional balance and its importance
- Identify characteristics of "burnout"
- Identify strategies to prioritize tasks and avoid "burnout"


Understanding Diversity Among Mentees

This seminar introduces important aspects of understanding diversity among mentees. It provides tools and strategies, including specific case scenarios that are to train mentors and mentees to deal with individual differences and to understand the impact of factors such as gender, culture, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation as well as learning and communication styles that define the relationship between the mentor and mentee and influence the mentee's development.

Objectives:

- Explain why diversity at UNM HSC is important for excellence
- Describe existing faculty diversity at UNM HSC and initiatives to enhance diversity
- Define unconscious bias
- Identify strategies to overcome unconscious bias and help the mentee succeed across differences


Benefits of Informal Mentoring

This seminar focuses on foundation of informal mentoring and how it can influence career development. Among other things it offers a comparative analysis of the difference between formal and informal mentoring at various stages in the mentoring process. Plus, the seminar makes the case that combining formal and informal mentor experiences provide the most effective professional development. Resources and training tools offer information on developing an informal relationship. Then, individual case scenarios show the challenges experienced in mentoring relationships.

Objectives:

- Explain why diversity at UNM HSC is important for excellence
- Define informal mentoring
- Discuss the process of informal mentoring, including the roles and responsibilities of mentoring partners
- Compare informal mentoring with formal mentoring


Leadership Skills & Opportunities: How to Build a Research Team

This seminar focuses on leadership skills that help in managing and developing a research team/lab. Among other things it offers information about how to lead and organize a team, how to manage and share resources with other faculty and fellows, how to find, hire and keep good people, how to lead productive meetings, and delegation strategies. In addition, the seminar provides resources and training tools for mentors and offers information on how to apply and teach leadership skills to mentees. Individual case scenarios show how leadership challenges can be handled effectively.

Objectives:

- Define leadership and situational leadership
    > Describe elements of leadership development
    > Describe elements needed for effectively guiding behavior as a leader
- Define and distinguish between leading and managing, and explore the practical applications of both
- Describe motivating factors, and understand those factors that lead to satisfaction or dissatisfaction
    > Describe how autonomy, mastery, and purpose contribute to motivation
- Identify your strengths and weaknesses in leading, both one-on-one and in team situations


Helping Mentees Obtain and Manage Grant Funding

This seminar focuses on finding writing and managing grants. Among other things it offers information about available K awards, mentored K award programs, program eligibity, selecting the right award and the application process. In addition, the seminar provides resources from UNM HSC research-related offices and funding sources. Individual case scenarios show common challenges that mentees face as they move toward independence.

Objectives:

- Identify resources for grantsmanship
- Identify internal and external funding sources for mentees
- Identify key components of K award
- Identify components for successful management of grant awards
